LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) Lexie Cook reports: A 31-year-old woman who posed as a sophomore at an East Texas high school is making international news, and now police say she could be older than they first thought.

“We’ve all seen her and we’ve all wondered about her because she’s always quiet and to herself, you know.”

– Roshunda Floyd, one of Charity Johnson’s co-workers

Longview police now say Charity Johnson lied to them about her age and is actually 34. She was arrested Tuesday for failure to identify herself after the woman she lived with suspected she was not who she claimed to be.

Brutally Honest New Revlon Ad Campaign Reminds Customers You Can’t Change What You Are

revlon-satire

Revlon executives say their products cannot conceal the horrors inside of you.

NEW YORK—Asserting that makeup can do little beyond creating a fleeting illusion of youth and beauty, cosmetics giant Revlon launched a new series of ads this week aimed at reminding its customers they will never be able to change what they are.

The company’s “You Are What You Are” campaign, which debuted with dark and haunting multi-page spreads in several major fashion magazines, cautions consumers that, at best, makeup is a sad disguise people hide behind in a futile attempt to avoid uncomfortable facts about their true nature.

“If you’re disappointed by what you see on the outside, just imagine how horrifying you must be on the inside…”

“With our new ad campaign, we want to emphasize that you can buy all the lotions, powders, and fragrances you want, but you can’t escape who you really are: a fragile, flawed, and ultimately insignificant being who is tormented by fear and insecurity,” Revlon vice president Vivian Falk said in a press release introducing the advertisements. “It’s fine to use our products if they make you feel a little more attractive, but just remember it’s only a temporary distraction from the terrifying reality of your barren, unfulfilling life.”

“Your existence is a dismal and feeble one, and no amount of mascara is ever going to change that,” Falk added. Read the rest of this entry »

On March 7, Isaac Stone Fish, a well experienced journalist on China, expressed his frustration about the mysteries of Chinese military in his article “The Black Box of China’s Military”.

Such frustration is common among people, not only outside, but also inside China.

In the expanded second edition of my book “Tiananmen’s Tremendous Achievements,” soon to be on sale at amazon.com to mark the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Protests, there is the section titled “Looking through the Black Box,” excerpts of which are given below:

“There is a way to look through the black box. We can judge the events taking place in the black box in secret by the circumstances and happenings before and after an event.

“In fact, keeping information about power center secret is not merely CCP’s modern practice. It was also a practice in feudal courts. Still we Chinese have…

NSA techs perform an unauthorized field upgrade to Cisco hardware in these 2010 photos from an NSA document.

“…some of the most productive operations in TAO because they pre-position access points into hard target networks around the world.”

For Ars TechnicaSean Gallagher reports:

A document included in the trove of National Security Agency files released with Glenn Greenwald’s book No Place to Hide details how the agency’s Tailored Access Operations (TAO) unit and other NSA employees intercept servers, routers, and other network gear being shipped to 41kyUVgelLL._SL110_organizations targeted for surveillance and install covert implant firmware onto them before they’re delivered.

Honoring Dennis Hopper: ‘Easy Rider’ Festival

TAOS, N.M. (AP) — Susan Montoya Bryan writes:  Motorcyclists and movie fanatics from as far away as Canada made the pilgrimage to northern New Mexico to celebrate Dennis Hopper and his iconic counterculture film “Easy Rider.”

“His image really represents the spirit of Taos. He was independent, slightly eccentric but incredibly talented. He sort of became a symbol for a whole new generation.”

– Town Manager Rick Bellis

Several dozen motorcycles gathered Saturday in the dusty, adobe encircled plaza in the community of Ranchos de Taos, 4 miles south of Taos, to kick off what town officials hope will be an annual event — Dennis Hopper Day — with a rally and ride through some of the places made famous in the film.

Motorcyclists pulled out of the plaza just before 1 p.m. MDT. Led by a police escort, they started their easy ride on the two-lane road heading out of Taos, a diverse town known for skiing, art and Hispanic and Native American culture. Not unlike scenes in the movie, snow-capped mountains served as a classic backdrop for much of the ride. Read the rest of this entry »

NASA’s Asteroid-Capture Mission May Test New Method to Defend Earth

For Space.comMike Wall writes:

NASA’s bold plan to park an asteroid near the moon may also test out a new way to protect Earth from dangerous space rocks.

Last year, the agency announced that it intends to tow a near-Earth asteroid into a stable lunar orbit, where it could be visited repeatedly by astronauts for research and exploration purposes. NASA officials are still ironing out the details of the mission, which may bag up an entire small space rock or snag a boulder off the surface of a large asteroid.

If NASA decides to go with the boulder option, the asteroid-capture mission will also include a planetary-defense demonstration, providing the first in-space test of a so-called “enhanced gravity tractor,” officials said. [Images: NASA's Asteroid-Capture Mission]

Given enough lead time, asteroids on a collision course with Earth can be safely deflected using a handful of methods. One of these is the gravity tractor technique, in which a robotic probe flies alongside a space rock for months or years, gradually nudging it off course via a slight gravitational tug. Investigators used the video of the Garland Avenue parking garage from Sunday to determine Julia Garcia’s report about being sexually assaulted there was false, according to the preliminary report released by the University of Arkansas Police Department.

Julia Garcia was arrested on suspicion of filing a false police report and released from the Washington County Detention Center without bond, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

“I like that they published her name and picture. When you file a false rape report, you’re not a victim.”

Glenn Reynolds

Garcia’s arraignment is scheduled for May 30, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The woman on Sunday reported to police that she was sexually assaulted in the Garland Avenue parking garage on campus. Officers immediately began searching for her alleged assailant, a 6-foot-tall man with a muscular build, according to the University of Arkansas Police Department.

White House Scandal Management Steps

Hot Air’s Mary Katharine Ham provides this inspired examination of the administration’s step-by-step playbook for avoiding questions and blame on scandals. See the whole thing here, it includes a YouTube video of ABC’s Jon Karl on the receiving end of White House Press Secretary Jay Carney’s indignation…

Step 1: “We’re just finding out about this ourselves and are as appalled as anyone over these allegations. We vow to get to the bottom of this and, if true, right this wrong swiftly and thoroughly. Nothing less than the honor of our nation and our people is at stake, and that will not come to harm on my watch.”

Step 2: “We are investigating ourselves right now to make sure we get to the bottom of this. It’s important that we get all the facts from ourselves, and in the meantime it would be inappropriate for ourselves to answer questions about the investigation we’re conducting on ourselves.”

Step 3: “Didn’t I just tell you we started an investigation of ourselves? Also, we noted our outrage. I cannot possibly make any statements about the very obvious wrongdoing that occurred on our watch until the investigation we’re conducting of ourselves is completed, printed on paper and in my hands. Anything else would jeopardize the integrity of our investigation of ourselves. Is that what you want?”

Step 4: “Only crazy wingers even ask questions about stuff like this. Are you a crazy winger? Do you think it’s a grand conspiracy in which the President of the United States conspired to personally hurt veterans? Do you think that’s an appropriate question to ask?”

Step 5: Wait six months, refer to formerly outrageous scandal as phony.

Step 6: Slow walk investigation and especially the release of requested and possibly incriminating documents for a year or more.

Step 7: “Oh, that ‘scandal’? Dude, that was a year ago. Who’s still talking about that?”
