Jonah Goldberg: ‘The Left’s Anger is Palpable’

tiny-head-left-obama

Resenting the Republic

For National Review Online, the frequently-insightful Jonah Goldberg writes:

You wouldn’t think, five years into the Obama presidency, that so many liberal Americans wouldn’t like America.

A new Pew survey found that 44 percent of Americans don’t often feel pride in being an American, and only 28 percent said that America is the greatest country in the world. Respondents who “often feel proud to be American” were overwhelmingly conservative (from 72 percent to 81 percent, depending on the kind of conservative). A majority (60 percent) of “solid liberals” said they don’t often feel proud to be an American.

“To listen to some of the hysterical responses to the court’s decision, you’d think the government in Washington is the only thing thwarting the desire of millions of businessmen to drape their female employees in burqas.”

The polling data only prove what has been obvious for a while.

Georgia representative John Lewis recently said that “if the Civil Rights Act was before the Congress today, it would not pass, it would probably never make it to the floor for a vote.”tyranny-cliche

[Jonah's book, The Tyranny of Cliches, is available at Amazon]

Lewis is right. If it came before the Congress today, it wouldn’t pass. You know why? Because we passed it 50 years ago. The GI Bill wouldn’t pass today either, because that was enacted in 1944. If, somehow, we had Jim Crow today, the American people — and Congress — would vote to abolish it in a landslide.

In fairness, Lewis was primarily condemning congressional gridlock, not GOP racism.

[VIDEO] The Hammer: End of Emergency Benefits = Sharp Drop in Unemployment: ‘Conservatives Won the Debate’

“These six months coincide with a decrease in the medium length of unemployment from 17 weeks to 13 weeks — the largest six-month decline in the length of unemployment ever measured…”

NRO captures this gem from Dr. Charles Krauthammer– here at punditfromanotherplanet, we affectionately call him The Hammer - from his appearance on Thursday’s Special Report :

While liberals hail new job numbers as a vindication of President Obama’s economic policies, it is conservatives who should feel vindicated, said Charles Krauthammer

Which means the real problem of long-term unemployment was a function of this anomaly of emergency-extended unemployment, which should never have happened…”

Citing a recent National Review Online post on The Corner by economist Robert Stein, Krauthammer noted that the sharp drop in unemployment has coincided with the end of emergency unemployment benefits.

“The debate on that extension is over, and the conservatives were right.”

Obama and the Democrats, who insisted that the benefits be extended, wrongly predicted that their expiration would come as a calamity to the poor. Instead, their end has demonstrably had “precisely the opposite effect.”(read moreNational Review Online

[VIDEO] Dinesh DSouza’s Documentary ‘America’ to Feature Megadeth Founder’s Heavy Metal National Anthem Exclusive

For The Hollywood Reporter, Paul Bond writes: Megadeth co-founder Dave Mustaine is marking the 45th anniversary of Jimi Hendrix’s rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner with a heavy metal guitar version of his own that will appear in America, Dinesh D’Souza’s follow-up to 2016: Obama’s America.

“First off, no version of our national anthem is or will ever be better than the original…”

Hendrix debuted his version of the song, also known as the U.S. national anthem, in the summer of 1969 at the now-historical Woodstock music festival, where it was panned by some for its irreverence and heralded by others as an instant classic. Still others assumed it was an anti-Vietnam War statement, but Hendrix simply saw it as patriotic. “We’re all Americans. … It was like, ‘Go America!’ ” he said…

[VIDEO] John Adams: ‘While I Live, Let Me Have a Country, a Free Country!’

From HBO’s “John Adams”, 2008. The life of one of the USA’s Founding Fathers, its second President, and his role in the nation’s first 50 years, featuring Paul GiamattiLaura LinneyJohn Dossett |See full cast and crew »

An extraordinary Adams speech, well-exectuted by Giamatti.

This series had such potential. Some unfortunate casting choices and a mediocre script made it less successful than it could have been. HBO started with material rich with history and drama, and managed to make it boring.

Casting Paul Giamattia as John Adams was perhaps the most misguided aspect of this production. I admire Giamatti’s work in other movies, but as John Adams, much of the time his performance results in unintended unserious, comic, lightweight moments. This speech, however, is an exception.

Opponents of illegal immigration had gathered in Murrieta to stop Friday’s planned transfer of Central American illegal aliens, as they did earlier this week. A pro-amnesty counter-demonstration was organized in response.

The illegal aliens, many of them unaccompanied children, are being brought from overcrowded Texas detention facilities for processing in California. Read the rest of this entry »
