A search for voodoo dolls on China’s online shopping platform Taobao yields thousands of results, with most of the 6,000 comments posted by females, according to the Chengdu-based West China City Daily.

Taobao merchant claimed that his dolls come from Thailand, have magic powers, and have received good comments from buyers. Another merchant said his dolls are only intended to release stress.

A female customer surnamed Zhang said she had bought a voodoo doll to punish a man who was harassing her, but became afraid at the sight of the doll poked by so many needles.

Voodoo dolls priced at 10 yuan ($1.6) or higher were also being sold in stores in downtown Chengdu.

Weng Jin, an psychology expert, said that voodoo dolls are not a healthy way for people to deal with negative emotions.
