Moscow (AFP) – A United States surveillance drone has been intercepted above the Ukranian region of Crimea, a Russian state arms and technology group said Friday.

“Judging by its identification number, UAV MQ-5B belonged to the 66th American Reconnaissance Brigade, based in Bavaria”

“The drone was flying at about 4,000 metres (12,000 feet) and was virtually invisible from the ground. It was possible to break the link with US operators with complex radio-electronic” technology, said Rostec in a statement.

The drone fell “almost intact into the hands of self-defence forces” added Rostec, which said it had manufactured the equipment used to down the aircraft, but did not specify who was operating it.

“Judging by its identification number, UAV MQ-5B belonged to the 66th American Reconnaissance Brigade, based in Bavaria” Rostec said on its website, which also carried a picture of what it said was the captured drone.

  1. So it didn’t just break down then. It was electronically knocked out of the sky but still managed to land safely. The concept of sovereign airspace is one the owners couldn’t quite grasp then.

    • The Butcher says:

The ‘concept of sovereign airspace’? The owners of what…the spy drone? I think it’s safe to say the owners (the military) of a U.S. spy drone (assuming the report is true, that’s not clear yet) understand what “sovereign air space” is, legally, conceptually, and otherwise. What else is stealth unmanned aircraft designed for? If not collecting intelligence while evading detection in someone else’s sovereign airspace? Seems like they can ‘grasp’ it okay.

      • It was flying into someone else’s airspace buts that ‘s OK the good guys own it.
Then they lost it, how embarrassing
What does a drone pencil out as, 1 million US?
Still they could just ask for it back. ROTFL.
It might even come back fixed.
        ROTGL with tears.
