A big rig carrying frozen chicken collided with another big rig carrying thousands of bees on the westbound 10 Freeway in Coachella Monday morning, prompting a hourslong cleanup operation and lane closures.
Melissa Pamer reports: About 7:11 a.m., a 2011 Freightliner carrying a load of chicken struck the rear of a 1991 Volvo in the far right lane of the freeway east of Dillon Road (map), according to the California Highway Patrol office in Indio.
The chicken truck had major damage and became engulfed in flames, spilling fuel onto the freeway and barbecuing some of the poultry inside the vehicle’s trailer.
The bees in the other truck escaped and became “aggravated,” Caltrans District 8 spokeswoman Terri Kasinga said in an email.
“Bees everywhere,” stated the CHP’s traffic incident log. Beekeepers were en route from Riverside and Bakersfield, the log said.
The No. 1 and No. 2 lane were expected to be closed for several hours, and drivers were being routed through a dirt median to get around the closure. A SigAlert was issued about 11:30 a.m….(read more)
