Manhunt for man accused of murdering five people in Georgia

DEVELOPING –  Murder suspect Thomas Jesse Lee, who allegedly killed his wife and four others in Georgia, was taken into custody in Tupelo, Miss., Troup County Sheriff James Woodruff announced Monday on the department’s official Facebook page.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Officials launched a nationwide manhunt Monday for a 26-year-old Georgia man suspected of murdering five people, including his wife and other family members, whose bodies were discovered in their suburban home Saturday evening.

“In law enforcement, you see bad things every day. But I’ve never seen a crime scene like this in my 25 years or so in law enforcement — never a scene with five victims inside a home.”

Thomas J. Lee, of Troup County, is wanted for the murders of four family members and a family friend. The bodies were found Saturday night  but authorities believe the deaths occurred Wednesday, Troup County Sheriff James Woodruff told Lagrange Daily News. Woodruff added that the U.S. Marshals Service has been called in to assist in the search.

According to Lagrange Daily News, the victims were identified Sunday as Thomas J. Lee’s wife Christie Lee, 33; her daughter Bailey Burtron, 16; Christie Lee’s parents, Sheila Burtron, 68, and William Burtron, 69; and family friend Iiaonna Green, 18, who recently moved into the home located in a suburb outside LaGrange, about 80 miles southwest of Atlanta and just east of the Alabama state line.

The bodies were discovered after William Burtron’s employer told 911 dispatchers he’d not been to work in several days and requested law enforcement officers check on his safety, Woodruff told the paper.

Deputies with the Troup County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the home at 10 p.m. Saturday and what they found, Woodruff told the paper, was a scene torn from a nightmare.

“In law enforcement, you see bad things every day,” he said. “But I’ve never seen a crime scene like this in my 25 years or so in law enforcement — never a scene with five victims inside a home.”

Woodruff said his office is not releasing the cause of death until autopsies are conducted Monday….(read more)
