Make America Bootyful Again: Joy Villa in MAGA Gown on Grammys 2017 Red Carpet

Villa

Singer Joyce Villa wore a ‘Make America Great Again’ gown.

Scandalous dresses on the Grammys red carpet aren’t what they used to be. It wasn’t deep cleavage or a thigh-high leg slit that had tongues wagging about singer Joyce Villa on Sunday night. It was her red, white and blue gown emblazoned with “Make
joyce-villaAmerica Great Again” in front, and “Trump” across the train.

It’s a controversial statement coming from an artist in an industry that’s largely in opposition to the new president’s social policies, not to mention from a woman who identifies as bi-racial.

[In other words, The Hollywood Reporter finds it shocking, and controversial for the President of the United States to receive public support from a non-white entertainer]

The singer-songwriter, who goes by the name Princess Joy Villa, teased the ensemble on Instagram with a photo of a heart-shaped clutch and a caption stating, “My whole artistic platform is about LOVE. I couldn’t be where I am today without the love and tenderness of those beautiful supporters and friends around me.”

Villa went on to say, ”I hope you enjoy tonight’s #grammyawards2017 and remember to forget your problems and focus on the future! You are infinite and beautiful and no one can stop you but you. Read the rest of this entry »

Marvel Comics to Abandon Social Justice Storylines?

captain-america-glamour-sized-770x415xt

The customers seem to have gotten through.

Tom Knighton writes: For a lot of comics fans, Marvel just isn’t what it used to be. While the comic line that gave us Thor, Captain America, The Hulk, and the X-Men has often been tinged with a bit of politics — for example, discrimination liberal-huhagainst mutants is common in the Marvel universe — recent comics from the company have been overwhelmingly political, and always politically left.

[Meanwhile, sales of comics are nosediving.]

Many fans have been less than appreciative. Luckily, it now seems those days are over:

Of late this kind of storytelling has become more pronounced, probably kicked off with the likes of The Authority, Ultimates and Civil War, with more recent stories in comics such a s Captain America, The Champions and Ms. Marvel wearing their politics firmly on their spandex sleeves. There has also been reaction from some fan communities and retailers to these kind of stories as having no place in superhero comics, despite all the many examples that have preceded it. Maybe it’s a little more obvious now? Maybe everyone is interpreting everything politically? Maybe fans wish for a time when they didn’t realise their superhero comics had political elements? Before West canceled the remainder of his Saint Pablo tour, he made a number of statements on stage and in a new interview that has left his fans both puzzled and outraged.

Josh Margolin and Lucina Fisher report: Hip-hop mogul Kanye West was hospitalized in Los Angeles Monday afternoon, an official told ABC News.

The cause and his condition were not immediately clear after the 1:20 p.m. incident.

Further details were not immediately available. A rep for the star did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Before West canceled the remainder of his Saint Pablo tour, he made a number of statements on stage and in a new interview that has left his fans both puzzled and outraged.

On Monday morning, the concert promoter Live Nation announced that West was canceling the remaining 21 shows of his tour and that all tickets would be refunded.

The news came a day after he unexpectedly canceled his Los Angeles concert just hours before it was a scheduled to begin and two days after he walked off the stage 30 minutes into a concert in Sacramento.

West’s rep pointed to the statement from Live Nation when asked for comment.

But the 39-year-old hip hop artist said plenty before that on a variety of subjects before the cancellation of his tour. Here now is Kanye West in his own words.

Nov. 20

Surface magazine releases its interview with West conducted in between stops on the Canada leg of his Saint Pablo Tour. In the 30-minute videotaped interview, West touches on a number of subjects from how he does business to his artistic abilities to his views on the future of communication. Here are some highlights:

“I think business has to be stupider. I want to do really straightforward, stupid business — just talk to me like a 4-year-old. And I refuse to negotiate. I do not negotiate. I can collaborate. But I’m an artist, so as soon as you negotiate, you’re being compromised.” Read the rest of this entry »

John Phillips: How the Liberal Media Accidentally Helped Trump

John Phillips writes: A lot of people were shocked by the results of last Tuesday’s presidential election, but I think it’s safe to say the only people more stunned than Hillary Clinton and her supporters were the news media; and by the media, I mean all of them.

“Never before has there been an election where the news media so overtly picked a side. This was true across all platforms — broadcast, entertainment and print — almost everybody in my profession wanted Hillary to win.”

It didn’t matter which network you were watching, as each anchor called the election for Trump they all had the same expression of complete and total bewilderment on their faces. The only thing I can compare it to is the look that attorney Robert Kardashian had on his kisser when the jury foreman read the OJ Simpson verdict.

“Trump has forced journalists to revisit rules of objectivity and fairness. Just providing both points of view is not enough in the current presidential campaign. If a candidate is making racist and sexist remarks, we cannot hide in the principle of neutrality. That’s a false equivalence.”

— Univision and Fusion anchor Jorge Ramos, in Time magazine

The conventional wisdom was that since Trump was hit with the kitchen sink on a daily basis, there was no way he could cobble together the necessary 270 electoral votes to win the election.

But he did.

And I actually think the media’s palpable disdain for the Manhattan billionaire ended up helping him with the American people.

“I actually think the media’s palpable disdain for the Manhattan billionaire ended up helping him with the American people.”

Writing in Time magazine, Univision and Fusion anchor Jorge Ramos insisted, “It doesn’t matter who you are — a journalist, a politician or a voter — we’ll all be judged by how we responded to Donald Trump. Like it or not, this election is a plebiscite on the most divisive, polarizing and disrupting figure in American politics in decades. And neutrality is not an option.”

And then Ramos went even further, saying, “Trump has forced journalists to revisit rules of objectivity and fairness. Just providing both points of view is not enough in the current presidential campaign. If a candidate is making racist and sexist remarks, we cannot hide in the principle of neutrality. That’s a false equivalence.”

Ramos’ remarks were celebrated by his peers. Read the rest of this entry »

‘But he asks his staff to respect the result’

Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz has made no secret of his disdain for Donald Trump.

In a letter to staff on Wednesday, Schultz said he was gobsmacked by the president-elect’s victory but said Americans had to respect the results.

“Like so many of our fellow Americans—both Democrats and Republicans—I am stunned,” Schultz wrote. Giant Coffee Cup“We cannot know what the precise impact will be on our country and the rest of the world. I am hopeful that we will overcome the vitriol and division of this unprecedented election season.”

Echoing the conciliatory tone of Trump’s opponent, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, and President Barack Obama in speeches Wednesday afternoon, Schultz said people needed to give Trump a chance to govern well.

In September, the politically outspoken Schultz endorsed Clinton for president, saying he remained optimistic about the country’s future, despite what he saw as an effort by politicians and the media to paint the nation with “cloudiness and despair.” Read the rest of this entry »

“Everybody is videoing it, but nobody stops to make sure he was okay.”

— Carla Meyers, cousin

For KHOU in HoustonDrew Karedes reports:

It was a bizarre and disturbing spectacle that drew a crowd of up to 30 people at a busy intersection in northwest Houston. Spectators pulled out their cell phones and began recording when they saw a naked man dancing in the median.

“He was doing the Beyonce, the surf board, twerking, the Nae Nae. Every dance that’s out there right now, he was doing. I didn’t know what was next.”

— Chad Arceneaux, witness

The man was spotted at the intersection of West Gulf Bank Road and Antoine Drive around 12:30 p.m. Neighbors said he’s been known to attract attention at a nearby complex, but they never expected this.

“…he’s been using embalming fluid to get high.”
