Marvel Comics to Abandon Social Justice Storylines?

Tom Knighton writes: For a lot of comics fans, Marvel just isn’t what it used to be. While the comic line that gave us Thor, Captain America, The Hulk, and the X-Men has often been tinged with a bit of politics — for example, discrimination against mutants is common in the Marvel universe — recent comics from the company have been overwhelmingly political, and always politically left.
[Meanwhile, sales of comics are nosediving.]

Many fans have been less than appreciative. Luckily, it now seems those days are over:
Of late this kind of storytelling has become more pronounced, probably kicked off with the likes of The Authority, Ultimates and Civil War, with more recent stories in comics such a s Captain America, The Champions and Ms. Marvel wearing their politics firmly on their spandex sleeves. There has also been reaction from some fan communities and retailers to these kind of stories as having no place in superhero comics, despite all the many examples that have preceded it. Maybe it’s a little more obvious now? Maybe everyone is interpreting everything politically? Maybe fans wish for a time when they didn’t realise their superhero comics had political elements? Tony Stark‘s support of government oversight for the Avengers Team can be traced to the grieving mother, Miriam. After a speech at M.I.T., Stark met Miriam who lost her son in the Sokovia. Miriam puts a face to collateral damage the Avengers leave in their wake. She indicated that her son was planning to help the world but was killed in an Avengers mission gone wrong.
Miriam suggests that Stark has innocent blood on his hands. Following the encounter, Stark works with General Thaddeus Ross to develop and sign a bill, the Sokovia Accords. Read the rest of this entry »

Marvel Comics is starting with a clean slate this fall, and fans should get ready for some huge changes — and controversy.
The company said Thursday that after its Secret Wars event ends it will launch an “all new, all different” Marvel universe which, according to Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso, will include no. 1 issues for about 60 titles.

“I think they’re going to offer diverse and exciting and, above all, accessible entry points into the Marvel universe,” Alonso told Speakeasy. “There will be a lot of flavors.”

“In the fall, the Marvel universe will see the arrival of an all-new Hulk, a Hulk you’ve never seen before that’s sure to be exciting and controversial. It’s going to be water-cooler talk. There will be a new Spider-Man in town, and — spoiler alert — there will be an all-new Wolverine. So let the speculation begin.”
The editor said Marvel is moving toward a more seasonal approach to its comics, much like cable TV shows, which will make them more accessible to a wider range of readers. There will also be big changes for some of Marvel’s most iconic characters.
“It’s important to point out that these were rooted in story. It was more that there was either a character or opportunity that came up in conversation that we examined and bore fruit.”

“The world as it is now is not the world of the 1960s. It’s a world where the new Peter Parker can be a 16-year-old Pakistani girl from Jersey City, where an African American can dress in the red, white and blue and ponder what that means.”

CW Orders ‘Flash’-‘Arrow’ Spinoff ‘DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,‘ Julie Plec Outbreak Drama, More
Posted: May 7, 2015 Filed under: Art & Culture, Comics, Education | Tags: Andrew Kreisberg, Arrow (TV series), Arrow Flash, Caity Lotz, Daredevil (Marvel Comics), Greg Berlanti, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Marvel Comics, Netflix Leave a commentNatalie Abrams and James Hibberd report: CW is stocking up on superheroes, giving a series order to the Arrow-Flash spinoff DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, EW has learned. Julie Plec outbreak drama Cordon and Rebecca Bloom’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend also scored series orders.
In Legends, when heroes alone are not enough, the world needs legends. Having seen the future, one he will desperately try to prevent from happening, time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) is tasked with assembling a disparate group of both heroes and villains to confront an unstoppable threat—one in which not only is the planet at stake, but all of time itself. Can this ragtag team defeat an immortal threat unlike anything they have ever known?
The drama—which hails from Arrow and Flash executive producers Andrew Kreisberg and Greg Berlanti, as well as Arrow boss Marc Guggenheim and Sarah Schechter—also stars Brandon Routh (Ray Palmer/The Atom), Wentworth Miller (Leonard Snart/Captain Cold), Dominic Purcell (Mick Rory, Heat Wave), Victor Garber (Martin Stein/Firestorm), Ciara Renee (Kendra Saunders, Hawkgirl), Franz Drameh (Jay Jackson) and Caity Lotz… though it’s still unclear whether she’ll be portraying a new role, since her Arrowcharacter, Sara Lance, died earlier this season.
With the spin-off going to series, that means Berlanti will have four superhero projects on the air next season following CBS’ pickup of Supergirl. The project—which aims to honor the great team up movies—joins a long line of comic book properties that are either coming to or are currently on television. For its part, Warner Bros. has Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, iZombie and Gotham. Read the rest of this entry »
John Anderson: ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ Review: A Superpowered Spectacle
Posted: April 30, 2015 Filed under: Art & Culture, Entertainment | Tags: Age of Ultron, Avengers (comics), Chris Evans (presenter), Chris Hemsworth, Iron Man, James Spader, Jeremy Renner, Joss Whedon, Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Marvel Comics, Robert Downey, Scarlett Johansson, The Avengers (2012 film), Ultron Leave a commentSuperheroes return in Marvel’s effects-and wit-filled sequel
John Anderson writes: Those truly committed to the Kremlinology of Marvel Comics will find “Avengers: Age of Ultron” a revelatory piece of 3-D entertainment. Who knew that the evil Baron von Strucker (Thomas Kretschmann) had been working on the kind of robotics that would provide superhero/industrialist Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), the groundwork for developing an artificial intelligence that could threaten the existence of all human life on Earth? Who knew The Incredible Hulk could be a romantic lead?
For those more concerned with what “The Avengers” movies do best—outsize spectacle and wry comedy—“Age of Ultron” has to be declared a victory. “Victory should be honored with revels,” declares hammer-throwing Scandinavian elocutionist Thor (Chris Hemsworth). “Who doesn’t love revels?” answers snark specialist Stark. “Revels” is a good word to describe it all, if one tends to revel in effects-driven mass destruction for the good of mankind.

Director Joss Whedon, under the auspices of the almost supernaturally profitable Marvel-Disney alliance, has brought back the core of 2012’s “The Avengers”—Mr. Hemsworth, Mr. Downey, Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Mark Ruffalo (the Hulk), Chris Evans (Captain America), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye)—along with several subordinate supervillains and heroes to embellish the plot and set up the sequel (well on its way, to judge by the closing moments of “Ultron”). They include the brother-sister act of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch (Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen), whose superpowers are the result of Strucker’s experiments and whose antipathy toward the Avengers is rooted in the devastation visited upon their native Sokovia by now-reformed war merchant Tony Stark.
If any of this seems complicated—the fictional Sokovia, for instance, or that there was also a Quicksilver in “X-Men: Days of Future Past”—you really have to just let it go, the momentum of the movie being too much for cogitation. Read the rest of this entry »

Disney and Marvel are releasing 19 movies and TV shows between now and 2019, and they are all interconnected. All these titles are building up to Avengers: Infinity Wars, Parts I and II, out in 2018 and 2019. The Avengers (and probably some other heroes, like Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange) will have to stop him. See how the heroes and villains connect to one another, and plan out your viewing schedule…

Graeme McMillan: A Comic Book Crash-Course in ‘Captain Marvel’

With Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Nicole Perlman and Inside Out’s Meg LeFauve now in the running to write the 2018 Captain Marvel, audiences might be started to get excited about the company’s first female-led movie. For those looking for an entry point into the character, here are the comic books to look for.
Essential Captain Marvel Vol. 1
Carol Danvers, Marvel’s current Captain Marvel, actually debuted during the early days of the first character to use that name in the Marvel Universe. This collection of the first 21 issues of his — yes, his — 1960s series introduces Danvers as a competent USAF officer and security chief who nonetheless falls for an alien soldier’s romantic charms… only to end up in a terrible accident as a result. It’s okay, though; it’s an accident that’ll give her superpowers soon enough. Think of this as Phase 1 Carol: little more than a love interest in less-enlightened times, but worth checking out for historical interest and a crash course in the alien race called the Kree.
Essential Ms. Marvel Vol. 1
Going from being an air force officer to a magazine editor was just one of the surprising changes awaiting Danvers when she graduated to her own comic book in the 1970s. Now part-alien as a result of the accident in the Captain Marvel series, she decided to fight crime and convince comic book readers that bared midriffs were in. This is Carol Phase 2: more independent, but just a little bit more generic at the same time. Read the rest of this entry »

But for all the completists out there who want their own scale version of the co-creator of the Marvel Universe, be warned: There will be only 1,000 available.
