…Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said the gunman was slain in an exchange of gunfire with police officers. The suspect was not identified but CNN reported it was a man in his late 20s.
“Its been a terrible day,” Hanlin said.
The gunman who opened fire asked people in an academic building to stand up and state their religion before he began shooting, a witness told the local News-Review newspaper
Kortney Moore, 18, was in Snyder Hall when the shooter asked people to name their religion and then began firing, she told the paper.
The shooting is the latest incident of gun violence in the United States, raising demands for more gun control and more effective treatment of the mentally ill.
CNN reported that among the wounded was a female who had been shot in the chest. The Oregonian said that at least six patients were critically injured in the shooting, citing an official with Life Flight.
Andi Dinnetz, an 18-year-old freshman at Umpqua, said she was in the building next to where the shooting took place and hid in a welding shop along with a teacher and classmates until a police officer arrived. She said she was “fine, but shaken.”
“They walked us straight through the crime scene with our hands up,” Dinnetz said. “It was more tense outside. In the classroom, everyone was trying to make jokes and keep it from being as serious as it was.”
Roger Sanchez, a testing coordinator at the school, said students came running into the building where he worked. Read the rest of this entry »

OH YES THEY DID: Washington Driver Gets Six Months for ‘Marijuana-Related’ Crash That May Have Had Nothing to Do With Marijuana
Posted: May 19, 2015 Filed under: Crime & Corruption, Law & Justice, U.S. News | Tags: Family (biology), Federal Aviation Administration, Flight attendant, Florida, KPTV, Oregon, ORLANDO, Portland, Salt Lake City, United Airlines, Utah Leave a commentJacob Sullum writes: Today a Vancouver, Washington, pot smoker received a six-month jail sentence, followed by five years of probation, in a case that seems to illustrate the injustice caused by his state’s new definition of stoned driving. Scotty Rowles was driving his 1995 Ford pickup truck on East Mill Plain Boulevard around 6 p.m. on December 17, 2012, when Donald Collins stepped from the median into the street in front of him. According to KPTV, the Fox station in Portland, Oregon, “Investigators said Collins was close to two different lit and controlled intersections, but stepped out in the middle of traffic to try and cross the road.” On the face of it, Collins’ death was not Rowles’ fault. But a police officer smelled marijuana on Rowles, who admitted that he had smoked “a little bowl” one or two hours earlier. He was charged with vehicular homicide.

Prosecutors dropped that charge after concluding that there was insufficient evidence to support it. But they changed their minds after a blood test put Rowles’ THC level at 7.2 nanograms per milliliter, 2.2 nanograms above Washington’s new cutoff for driving under the influence of marijuana. Because of that rule, which was included in the marijuana legalization intitiative that voters approved a month before the accident, Rowles was guilty of DUI even if he was not actually impaired. In particular – flights of Tupolev Tu-95 Bear ‘H’ Bombers have increased recently NORTHCOM’s Adm. Bill Gortney said.

NORTHCOM’s Adm. Bill Gortney
“They’ve been very aggressive – under my NORAD hat – for us in the Arctic. Aggressive in the amount of flights, not aggressive in how they fly.”
Since the March seizure of the Ukrainian region of Crimea by Russian forces Moscow has significantly stepped up air patrols in Europe, Asia and near the Americas.

[VIDEO] What Happens When Anarchists Have a Conference, and One Half Starts Protesting the Other Half? Chaos Ensues

Video contains strong language.
From metro.co.uk: You could say that the 5th annual Law and Disorder conference was a success as true anarchy won the day, with the panelists forced to abandon the conference room.
Anarcho-Syndicalists protest get protested at their own conference. A panelist by the name of Kristian Williams was scheduled to speak at the annual Law & Disorder conference, but was thwarted by a protest. No one could actually articulate what their issue is with Mr. Williams.
From the Portland State University website:
“Law and Disorder calls for people, movements, organizations and collectives to present alternative accounts to the political dimensions of civic engagement, mutual aid and revolution as they relate to economics, politics, invention, technology, work, artistic and cultural production, the body, pedagogy and social change. The conference promises to create a provocative space for comparative critical dialogue between activists, revolutionaries, educators, artists, musicians, scholars, dancers, social/cultural workers, doulas, actors and writers. The conference invites panels and workshop on all aspects of social change from the revolutionary to the academic.”
From thelibertarianrepublic.com
A meeting of Anarcho-Syndicalists devolved into chaos at Portland State University last week. The “Law & Disorder” conference presented by the Students of Unity was disrupted by protesters complaining about “survivor trauma” and the “patriarchal society” which is “prioritizing powerful white men.”
Eventually police were called, causing the protesters to flee. Read the rest of this entry »

People Care About Oppressive Business Regulations When They Ensnare Cute Little Girls

Too cute to be regulated
Scott Shackford reports: The holiday outrage du jour comes from Portland, Oregon, as adorable little Madison Root, 11, was barred from selling her dad’s mistletoe at a local weekend craft market to pay for her braces.
KATU in Portland reported the initial incident and what happened afterward:
Madison’s saga started on Saturday morning when she was banned from selling the mistletoe she collected in downtown Portland because city code forbids unauthorized sales activity in public parks, which is where vendors hold the weekly Saturday Market.
KATU News aired a story about the 11-year-old on Sunday night after her dad called its newsroom.
By Monday, KATU viewers had placed hundreds of orders and a local entrepreneur even donated $1,000 in seed money to help Madison grow her business.
Meanwhile, officials in City Hall were silent, refusing to return phone calls or speak on camera about the city code that appeared to encourage begging rather than selling.
By Tuesday, television and radio stations across the country aired KATU’s report for their own local viewers.
Now that there’s a wave of outrage that business regulations can also be used against adorable little moppets, Portland’s mayor is discussing possible changes to the city’s codes:
Portland Mayor Charlie Hales confirmed Tuesday morning he met with Commissioner Amanda Fritz to discuss why city code would ban a child from selling mistletoe from a public park while allowing begging, pan-handling, singing, and protesting.
A spokesman for Mayor Hales said he plans to contact the staff at Portland’s Saturday Market to better understand what happened and whether procedures could be tweaked to allow kids to sell.
But only kids! If some greasy old homeless guy wants to sell knick-knacks to try to save up money for an apartment, to hell with him. Well, unless the Portland Saturday Market (the private nonprofit organization that oversees the sales in the city park) agrees to waive the fee and give him a free membership, which is exactly what they did for little Madison once the news got around. Katy Steinmetz reports: The thread started with a simple, if bizarre, question: How do you keep local sous chefs from harvesting urban edibles on your property? The frustrated query came from a resident in Portland, Ore., a foodie mecca that’s generally proud of its alternative, steampunky ways. Posted on Reddit earlier this week, the plea for advice generated hundreds of comments, and a local news outlet soon uncovered another tale of herbal thievery. Read the rest of this entry »
Signature Vandalism Spree in Portland Smells Like Occupy Movement

Police were called and while still en route learned the crowd was roving to other banks, smashing windows as they went. Eventually four banks–Umpqua, Chase, Wells Fargo, US Bank–had smashed windows along with a Walgreens drug store.
Video of the damage was posted on You Tube Friday:
According to a press release issued by the Portland PD, the mob of vandals evaporated into the neighborhood before police arrived. However, police did locate and detain some individuals believed to be part of the group. They are collecting video tapes from the affected businesses and expect to be able to make arrests using the tapes to identify those responsible…
