Paris Shooting: Two Police Officers Killed After Incident on Champs-Elysees

A gunman has shot two police officers dead before being killed himself in an attack in the Champs-Elysees shopping district, Paris police say.

Paris police spokeswoman Johanna Primevert told reporters the attacker targeted police guarding the area near the Franklin D Roosevelt metro stop on Thursday night (local time) at the centre of the avenue, which is popular with tourists.

One police officer was killed on the scene and one died later from his wounds, police sources said.

The person who fired on police was also killed and a police source said the attacker was known to security services.

French Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said police officers were targeted in the shooting, but it is too early to say what the motive was.

A police union on Twitter said the first officer killed had been shot by an attacker driving past as the officer’s car was stopped at a red light.

Witnesses reported a helicopter flying low over central Paris, apparently part of a follow-up police operation.

Authorities called on the public to avoid the area.

More Paris Arrests After Clashes Over Police Killing of Chinese Man

Ten people were arrested in a second night of protests in Paris over the killing by police of a Chinese father of five, an incident that has caused tensions with Beijing.

Around 400 members of the Asian community and supporters of anti-racism groups gathered outside a police station in the northeast of the capital to again denounce the fatal shooting of Shaoyo Liu, 56, in his home two days earlier.

Those who were arrested had thrown projectiles, the police said, bringing to 45 the number of protesters detained since the killing which led the Chinese government to file an official complaint.

The police say three officers were called to the man’s home in the multi-ethnic 19th district of Paris on Sunday evening after reports of a domestic dispute.

They say the man attacked a policeman with a knife, causing injuries, and that another officer then opened fire in self-defence, killing the man.

The dead man’s family were present at the time of the shooting and dispute the police version of events, denying there was a domestic row.

“He didn’t injure anyone,” the family’s lawyer Calvin Job said, adding that the man was “trimming fish with a pair of scissors” when the police burst down his door and “fired without warning”. Read the rest of this entry »

1 Killed, 4 Injured in Shooting at ZombiCon

Police say a shooting at the annual ZombiCon gathering in Florida has left one person dead and five more injured, causing a chaotic scene that sent throngs of zombie-dressed revelers running through the streets.

The shooting happened around 11:45 p.m. Saturday night, just 15 minutes before the event officially ended. However, large crowds were still in the streets and authorities quickly cleared out nearby bars and set up crime scene tape, while others patrolled the area with rifles searching for a suspect.

Fort Myers Police Lt. Victor Medico said Expavious Tyrell Taylor, a 20-year-old who played football at a local junior college, died at the scene, but no other details about his death were released.

Four others were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and one additional victim refused medical attention, authorities said.

Authorities said the suspect or suspects is still at large and did not release any information about a possible motive.

“There were a lot of witnesses down here, there were a lot of people taking pictures, videos with their cellphone,” Medico told the News-Press. “Anything that could help with this investigation would be greatly appreciated.”

Police did not immediately return email and phone call messages on Sunday seeking additional details. Medico told reporters the agency had been inundated with national media requests and would not be making any comments “as we tirelessly investigate this incident and gather as many facts as possible.”

The annual festival had been expected to draw more than 20,000 fans dressed as zombies, the newspaper said. Medico said the scene was described as “shoulder to shoulder.” Read the rest of this entry »

[VIDEO] Cell Phone Video: St. Louis Police Officer Shoots and Kills Kajieme Powell

Man Shot and Killed by St. Louis Police Officer

On Tuesday, two officers from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department shot and killed Kajieme Powell, who was 25 years old.

“There is a dangerous dynamic in the night,ヤ he said. モIt allows a small number of violent agitators to hide in the crowd and then attempt to create chaos.”

Powell was suspected of shoplifting energy drinks and donuts from a convenience store. The shop owner, believing that Powell was carrying a weapon, contacted police. Another witness, Ald. Dionne Flowers, who represents the area and owns a beauty salon in the same block, noticed that Powell was acting erratically and also called police. Flowers told police she saw a second knife, though only one was recovered at the scene.

Ferguson protest at night

Rob Crilly reporting from Ferguson for The Telegraph:

Sam Dotson, St Louis Police Chief, said in a tweet that officers had responded to a call and found an apparently agitated man, armed with a knife who yelled, “Kill me now” before approaching the patrol.

Some bystanders questioned whether the man was armed and said he was accused of stealing two bottles of soda.

An angry crowd grew quickly outside the convenience store where the latest victim died.

Some young men said they planned to burn it down and accused the police of being intent on murdering young black men.

“Why didn’t they use a Taser,” said Germaine Leroy. “What are they shooting for? I’ve been shot with a Taser so I know how it incapacitates.”

The case of Michael Brown, 18, who was unarmed when he was shot dead by a white officer, has polarised the nation. Night after night demonstrators have fought running battles with police who are struggling to maintain control. Read the rest of this entry »

New research on mass shootings shows the same thing all the other new research shows: assault weapon use rare, no epidemic

writes:  A recently completed study at Northeastern University finds that many of the ‘facts’ circulated by gun control groups about mass shootings in the US are far from it. In fact, the study contends that mass murders rarely use ‘assault weapons,’  cannot be prevented with background checks and gun bans, and that the rates of these shootings as well as their toll is not increasing.

The 22-page study, entitled  Mass Shootings in America: Moving Beyond Newtown was compiled by criminology professor James Alan Fox and Monica J. DeLateur. In the study, the two smash a number of gun myths through hard statistical work. Without taking funds from either side in the argument, the work is impartial.

‘Un-flipping believable’: Obama, DC Mayor push gun control during memorial service for Navy Yard victims

As predictable as the sun coming up in the east, it was politics as usual during the memorial service for those killed in the shootings at the Washington Navy Yard:

Surprising nobody in particular, President Obama used his address to set up calls for more gun control:

The shooter, Aaron Alexis, purchased a shotgun (as Joe Biden recently advised Americans to do) and obtained a handgun at the site of the shooting. A major factor in the shootings appears to be mental illness, but that fact won’t stop the push to pass more laws to stop people who don’t obey laws.

Poll: Mental Health Failures Blamed for Most Gun Violence, not Access to Guns

Elizabeth Sheild writes: In a rebuke to the gun-obsessed main stream media, Gallup released a new poll showing that most Americans blame a failing mental health system for mass shootings in the United States. What is notable is that there is a drop of 6% among adults who blame “easy access to weapons.”

Almost half (48%) say the “failure of the mental health system to identify individuals who are are a danger to others” is a “great deal” to blame for mass shootings. Forty percent say it is “easy access to guns.” This is a drop from 2011, when the survey was taken after the shooting in Tucson, Arizona. Read the rest of this entry »
