Paris police spokeswoman Johanna Primevert told reporters the attacker targeted police guarding the area near the Franklin D Roosevelt metro stop on Thursday night (local time) at the centre of the avenue, which is popular with tourists.
One police officer was killed on the scene and one died later from his wounds, police sources said.
The person who fired on police was also killed and a police source said the attacker was known to security services.

French Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said police officers were targeted in the shooting, but it is too early to say what the motive was.
A police union on Twitter said the first officer killed had been shot by an attacker driving past as the officer’s car was stopped at a red light.
Witnesses reported a helicopter flying low over central Paris, apparently part of a follow-up police operation.
Authorities called on the public to avoid the area.

More Paris Arrests After Clashes Over Police Killing of Chinese Man
Posted: March 29, 2017 Filed under: China, Crime & Corruption, France, Politics | Tags: Paris, Protest, Shaoyo Liu, Shooting 1 CommentTen people were arrested in a second night of protests in Paris over the killing by police of a Chinese father of five, an incident that has caused tensions with Beijing.
Around 400 members of the Asian community and supporters of anti-racism groups gathered outside a police station in the northeast of the capital to again denounce the fatal shooting of Shaoyo Liu, 56, in his home two days earlier.
Those who were arrested had thrown projectiles, the police said, bringing to 45 the number of protesters detained since the killing which led the Chinese government to file an official complaint.
The police say three officers were called to the man’s home in the multi-ethnic 19th district of Paris on Sunday evening after reports of a domestic dispute.
They say the man attacked a policeman with a knife, causing injuries, and that another officer then opened fire in self-defence, killing the man.
The dead man’s family were present at the time of the shooting and dispute the police version of events, denying there was a domestic row.
“He didn’t injure anyone,” the family’s lawyer Calvin Job said, adding that the man was “trimming fish with a pair of scissors” when the police burst down his door and “fired without warning”. Read the rest of this entry »

On Tuesday, two officers from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department shot and killed Kajieme Powell, who was 25 years old.
“There is a dangerous dynamic in the night,ヤ he said. モIt allows a small number of violent agitators to hide in the crowd and then attempt to create chaos.”
Powell was suspected of shoplifting energy drinks and donuts from a convenience store. The shop owner, believing that Powell was carrying a weapon, contacted police. Another witness, Ald. Dionne Flowers, who represents the area and owns a beauty salon in the same block, noticed that Powell was acting erratically and also called police. Flowers told police she saw a second knife, though only one was recovered at the scene.
Rob Crilly reporting from Ferguson for The Telegraph:
Sam Dotson, St Louis Police Chief, said in a tweet that officers had responded to a call and found an apparently agitated man, armed with a knife who yelled, “Kill me now” before approaching the patrol.
Some bystanders questioned whether the man was armed and said he was accused of stealing two bottles of soda.
An angry crowd grew quickly outside the convenience store where the latest victim died.
Some young men said they planned to burn it down and accused the police of being intent on murdering young black men.
“Why didn’t they use a Taser,” said Germaine Leroy. “What are they shooting for? I’ve been shot with a Taser so I know how it incapacitates.”
The case of Michael Brown, 18, who was unarmed when he was shot dead by a white officer, has polarised the nation. Night after night demonstrators have fought running battles with police who are struggling to maintain control. Read the rest of this entry »

Julie Golob is one of the world’s best pistol shooters, take her advice
Benchrest shooters are obsessed with it. Firearm and ammunition testers rely on it. Even the fastest shooters in the world add this to their list of drills. I’m talking about shooting groups.
On one side of the spectrum, for precisions shooters, a tight group means success. Jamie Lynn Gray drilled the 10-ring seven times out of 10 in her 10-shot final at the 2012 Olympic Games in Women’s 50-meter Three-Position Rifle. With a group size smaller than 1.5 inches for the entire event, she set an Olympic Record and won the coveted gold medal.
