AIRBAGS FOR BIKERS: Inflatable Motorcycle Suit Provides Instant Crash Protection

airbagsuit

Three motorcyclists competing in the final race of the international MotoGP circuit this month will have extra injury insurance, in the form of wearable airbags. Alpinestars’s Tech Air Race suit uses an onboard computer to sense the subtle differences between regular track turbulence and the motion associated with an impending crash, and it fires fall-cushioning airbags on the shoulders and collarbone (an oft-injured area for racers) before the biker hits the ground. These bags are nearly 10 times as effective at preventing injury as other armor. With foam pads, the impact at 200 mph is still more than 4,000 pounds of force; when this suit’s bags are inflated, that number is cut to 450 pounds—the difference between a collarbone fracture and a bruise.

Alpinestars anticipates that its consumer-grade suit—with two 2-quart bags, like those currently on pro tracks—will go on sale next year, with airbag-equipped jackets for everyday riders rolling out around 2013.

How To Cushion A Fall

A 1.1 pound computer set between the rider’s shoulder blades collects G-force, vibration and tilt data from seven sensors throughout the suit every two milliseconds….(read more)

‘Isolating package to be safe’

A UPS facility in San Bernardino was evacuated Friday evening after a delivery driver discovered a package addressed to a “suspect” home in Redlands, authorities said.

Multiple police vehicles were seen shortly after 8:30 p.m. outside the UPS customer center in the 1400 block of East Victoria Avenue (map).

The evacuation was ordered out of an abundance of caution, according to San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan.

“Package with delivery address to suspect res (sic) in Redlands,” Burguan said on Twitter. “Isolating package to be safe.”

Althought the item was from a “reputable vendor,” UPS officials called police “just to be safe” after noticing its delivery address, the police chief tweeted.

It was unclear if the item had been sent to a particular suspect, according to Burguan.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department bomb technicians were responding to the scene, police said. Read the rest of this entry »

la-1-200-guns-found-in-home-after-discovery-of-man-s-body-in-car-lapd-20150721

LOS ANGELES (AP) – An attorney said Wednesday that the body of a mystery man was decomposing in his car in the tony Pacific Palisades neighborhood in Southern California for nearly two weeks before he was found by authorities on July 17.

Inside his home, detectives discovered more than 1,200 guns, scopes, 6.5 tons of ammunition, bows and arrows, knives, machetes and $230,000 in cash.

They also found eight of the 14 vehicles registered to the man stashed across Los Angeles, including a Toyota SUV designed to drive underwater.

Who the man was and how he came to accumulate the arsenal and vehicles are questions authorities are still trying to answer.

Veteran defense attorney Harland Braun represents the man’s fiancée Catherine Nebron and identified him as Jeffrey Alan Lash.

That’s also the name coroner’s officials are working with and they’re in touch with a relative to try to officially identify the body, said Craig Harvey, chief of investigations for the coroner’s office.

Lash and Nebron were together for 17 years and she believed him when he told her that he worked as an undercover operative for multiple unnamed government agencies, Braun said.

“The story itself sounds totally crazy but then how do you explain all this?” Braun said. “There’s no evidence he was a drug dealer or he stole these weapons, or had any criminal source of income, no stolen property, all the stuff you’d look for.” Read the rest of this entry »

The incident started at around 12.15pm local time (11.15am BST), sending screaming shoppers running into shops for safety.

New York Daily News, Feb 8, 2015: Bruce Jenner Reportedly Blamed Paparazzi for the Crash, Sergeant Disputes that Claim

nyDailynews

Bruce Jenner blamed a pursuing pack of paparazzi Saturday for a horrific California four-car pileup that left one woman dead and five more hospitalized.

The fatal wreck occurred on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, with one-time Olympic gold medalist Jenner luckily able to walk away from the carnage, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Matt Dunn.

“He is not under any investigation right now as far as driving while intoxicated. Mr. Jenner did not appear to be injured in the accident, nor does it appear he was the cause of the accident.”

A 1-month-old baby inside a Hummer involved in the wreck also escaped without injury, authorities said.

The pony-tailed Jenner, 65, who is reportedly transitioning from a man to a woman, was fleeing five photographers when his Cadillac Escalade rear-ended a white Lexus, sources in his family told TMZ.

The chain-reaction wreck at 12:12 p.m. killed the woman at the wheel of the Lexus while scattering pieces of glass, plastic and shredded steel on the highway.

A witness told USA Today that photographers stood snapping photos of the shaken Jenner — who was driving the Escalade — in the minutes after the harrowing fatal accident.

fatal-crash-malibu

“It happened so fast,” said Veronica Bermudez, an employee at the nearby Malibu Roadhouse who echoed Jenner’s charge about the chase by the celebrity shutterbugs.

“They (paparazzi) were here right away,” she told the newspaper. “How could they have gotten here that fast otherwise? I don’t know why they have to follow him, and not just leave him alone.”

Photos captured the actual moment of impact when Jenner’s black SUV slammed into the rear of the stopped Lexus. Jenner slammed on the brakes, leaving skidmarks in his wake before the massive crash, said Sgt. Philip Brooks of the sheriff’s department.

But the sergeant disputed the reports of a paparazzi chase preceding the wreck.

“That wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense, but it’s always possible,” said Brooks. “We can’t confirm that.”

The reality show star and former decathlon champion became the center of massive media attention in recent weeks over reports that he was going to become a woman. Read the rest of this entry »

China Faces its Own ‘War on Terror’

DW6JPR

Victor Zhikai Gao is director of China National Association of International Studies. He was a former employee of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and served as English interpreter for Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping in the 1980s.

For CNNVictor Gao writes: For many decades, unlike their counterparts in many Western countries, Chinese police did not carry guns. Even the armed police in China, charged mainly with guarding foreign embassies, government buildings and important facilities, would normally only carry unloaded guns, keeping the bullets separate.

A police officer firing a gun was a rarity, because China was a safe country.

Recently, however, a major shift is occurring that is significantly changing the landscape, as China faces its own “war on terror.”

With the war in Afghanistan winding down, there has been an intensification of terrorist attacks in China. Most bear the same tell-tale fingerprints. They originate from China’s Xinjiang Autonomous Region, which borders Afghanistan, and are perpetuated by extremists from China’s Uyghur minority, a mainly Turkic-speaking Muslim population.

Super-Militarization of Law Enforcement Agencies Continues: Dallas County Now Has Its Very Own Bulletproof, “Mine-Protected” Military SUV

DSOMRAP-thumb-565x422
Now that the war in Iraq is officially over and the one in Afghanistan winding down, the Department of Defense found itself facing a conundrum. It had just spent billions of dollars buying heavily armored personnel carriers designed to stand up to insurgent attacks only to find that it had run out of wars to use them in.The initial plan was to shove the vehicles, called MRAPS (Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected) into a warehouse and let them collect dust. That changed when someone decided that, having served so admirably overseas, it would be only just to bring the MRAPs stateside and deploy them in the domestic war on crime.

And so, for the past couple of months, news reports have been popping up announcing that places like Murfreesboro, Tennessee and Ohio State University have been receiving their very own military-grade armored SUVs.

Now, it’s Dallas’ turn. Read the rest of this entry »
